These are the final notes by the Editor of the article of Ahmed Bey Hassanein. It tells how it was done and how to use it.

Credits and Copyrights

The 1924 Article was photocopied by Noha Gaber from an original 1924 copy of the National Geographic magazine at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in December 2005.  This is the scanned PDF document you can download from the left sidebar. The article was then OCRed and formatted by Mohamed Mabrouk in pdf and htm. Noha and Mohamed are both members of SaharaSafaris.org

In February 2006 Michael Haag (editor of the new 2006 reprint by AUC Press) has loaned us an authentic 1924 copy of National Geographic. Mohamed Mabrouk has scanned the pages from Michael's copy to produce the high quality images used in this website.

The original copy is more than 75 years old and therefore is Public Domain (no copyrights). The new digital format and its footnotes (pdf and htm) to be found here are NOT a Public Domain and are, therefore, copyrighted to the Editors of SaharaSafaris.org.

Still, you are encouraged to share it with all others who might be interested in NON-commercial use. For any commercial use, there are no fees whatsoever, but the source (www.SaharaSafaris.org) is hoped to be mentioned clearly as one of your sources.

Digital Format

The article provided here is EXACTLY typed as in the original copy including punctuations, spelling, photos orders and format. Because of many cross-references to other pages and photos in the original article, the Page Numbers has been preserved in small symbols (e.g., (p277) that marks the end of each page from the original copy of the magazine. Also, all photos have their page numbers held in square brackets (eg, [photo page 277]). The whole article has been made downloadable in .PDF for those who wish to print. Other formats (eg, html) is available for online access from SaharaSafaris.org and is divided for the 23 sections of the article.

NEEDLESS TO SAY, additions are constantly received, so if you have any other items about Ahmed Hassanein which we can use here, your contribution will be credited here. This applies on all other sources of information of relation to the subjects here.

Why This Effort?

Ahmed Bey Hassanein was a man of the world when the world was changing very rapidly. His adventure is inspirational for all who like to explore the Sahara. To understand his motives and methods, it was very useful to research the contemporary history of Egypt, Britain, Europe, Ottomans and the Senussis of hit time. I also explored a bit into the history of exploration of Libyan Desert, and Africa. It was enjoyable. In my spare time, I managed to make it seem reasonably readable. Some of it is now placed to share and inspire everybody on SaharaSafaris community's website  www.SaharaSafaris.org. If you have more questions, you can email Mohamed Mabrouk who made the footnotes and research.

For more details on motives behind the research and how it was done, please see the Why This Site?.
