I know this is a little off-topic. I need to buy a new computer. I have one that's an 8 years old Pentium I 100 MHz, right now I'm using my wife's laptop which is not enough.

Can anybody help me where to buy one? I don't know if I'm gonna go for costume or brand. Are there any computer experts around here?

The computer dealers are everywhere. I can lead you to a good one. That
is no problem.

Read your book first and let me know your decision.

Thanks Tarek,

But where from?
I found a book at the AUC library that deals with this subject in
detail. I'm gonna read it first.

Ahmed,

Advantages of a brand name machine over a custom built one:

1. Support after sale, local and international. (depending who you buy
it from).
2. Integrity of the machine. Everything will run smoothly with hardly
any hardware problems.
3. You can always show off with your brand name computer.

Disadvantages:

1. Prices are nearly double if not more.
2. Not getting proper support after sale (depending who you bought it
from). They might not have that little RAM chip that you need, or the
replacement power supply after you burnt off yours with wrong voltage
adjustment, so you are stuck until you get a replacement or back to
Carmen's !!!
3. You do not have the flexibility to modify the machine as per your
requirements. It has to be via the company specs to be covered by the
warranty.
4. You will always get the "blue windows" error screen in both cases.

If you need it for graphics, you will need as much memory and disk
storage as possible. Do not settle for less than 256 MB of RAM and a P4
Processor with a powerful 1.7 GHz. As for disk storage, get some hard
drive with a capacity of not less than 80 Gigs.

A powerful graphics card of 64 MB is a minimun nowadays.

A Professional monitor of not less than 17" will be a start ! Go for 20"
if you can afford it. You will need that desktop space with graphics.

You will need a CD writer/RW to backup your work. Do not go for cheap
ones. This is valuable !

A cheap scanner could do the job till you get your high res scans done
outside or until you can afford your own.

If you are planning go digital, think of USB2, and a IEEE 1394 firewire
connections in the computer. You will definitely need those for high
speed transfers. (check the camera/back manufacturer for connections
needed).

An ISDN line or DSL will be your high speed goal to connect to us via
internet. You will need fast connections to download/upload your work
from/to the www. So do not get one with an internal modem.

Always external everything. Be in control and on top of things !

So, I think you are better off with a custom built one after all.

As for your old Pentium I 100 MHz, You will have to find a museum for
that !!
