Center is tentatively located in the annex space of Townhouse gallery. Soft opening will be announced. A search for a bigger space downtown is underway. No link as yet but will keep egyptphotography updated with announcemnts of activities... etc

The Center for Contemporary Image ? Cairo
An independent, artist-run collective dedicated to the visual image
Opening January 2005
Introduction:
Local visual culture production operates in a climate where the
content of news, literary and art production and art imagery is
controlled officially and unofficially through conservative forces
that direct public opinion and foster self-censorship.
Despite all the limitations, there exists a burgeoning new generation
of image makers that is pushing the boundaries and exploring the
personal/public visual image.
In the absence of formal training, art criticism and technical
support in the medium, there is a need for the creation of an artist-
run forum that would shift this situation through the promotion and
enrichment of a local proprietary visual language that reflects
contemporary society, contributes to the shaping of cultural identity
and redresses an exoticised imposed cultural representation. It would
pool the expertise and resources of an already established, yet
unlinked, community while providing support, fostering
interdisciplinary exchange, research and collaboration.
Current Status:
A proposal was submitted detailing the aims and activities of the
Center and was well received, securing the project.
A temporary space has been allocated.
Exhibitions, workshops and lectures will be hosted during January
2005.
The Center targets local and regional practitioners, academics,
students, and general members of the public, residing in Egypt and
abroad, interested in the promotion of the visual image borne out of
Egypt and this region.
Please feel free to circulate this announcement.
This is a landmark initiative for the local art community.
We are counting on your contribution at this crucial stage.
