Nice topic to begin with...A definition of art.....

I. Definition
The dictionary definition is that it is an expression of what is beautiful. Yet, art would also express what is ugly.. So, would an alternate definition of art as being "an expression or reflection of a feeling to convey an impression to the viewer/listener" be acceptable?

II. Purpose/Function
Art casts light on a certain idea, magnifying or clarifying it to the audience. Amazingly, art can, by stating the obvious, make us aware of an idea that had so long been there, right before our eyes, yet we had failed to recognize it.

III. What is Good Art
I heard someone once say: "...it is when you express yourself very personally...that you will be most universal". I guess that is because the depth of human experience, when expressed with so much truthfulness and simplicity touches everyone in one way or another, even if in varying degrees.

Please note that I had not studied literature extensively, so these were just "igtihadat" based on what I know, or at least think that I know...
