I have always been a reader of the literary newspaper Akhbar
Al Adab. Long before the bookshops where what they are now and long before
culture became a trend and a means of showing off, and long before the work of
marketeers and business gurus invaded our lives with posh chains of bookshops
and “cultural” initiatives, and long before facebook and twitter and even the
internet itself managed to be basic parts of our daily lives, that newspaper
was one of very few windows on what is new in books and the literary arena. Since
its launch, I have never missed an issue.
It was an issue of November 2004, a small article caught my
attention, it was accompanied by a photo of a group of people in like a
gathering. The short article was briefly describing a cultural group that does
some activities without giving details, apart from the interest that grew
inside me about the existence of such thing; the name Pen Temple Pilots caught
my hungry eyes.
I instantly jumped to my computer and started an avid search
on such group of people, after sometime I managed to reach a yahoo page for a
group with this name that required being a member to be able to view the
content. Being a non-expert with such things and feeling a bit weird, I finally
found an email for the group to which I sent a brief email introducing myself and
expressing my deep interest to know more about the group. My mail was extremely
formal and a bit cold and to my surprise the reply was immediate, very nice and
warm and the man who was welcoming me and telling me about the group was
actually ending it by inviting me to an art appreciation session with a  presentation that he personally present. The mail
was signed by “Camel”.
